The President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, will deliver the speech officially honoring Jaron Lanier, the American computer scientist, musician and writer who is the recipient of this year's Peace Prize of the German Book Trade.
The award ceremony will take place during the Frankfurt Book Fair on Sunday, October 12, 2014, at 10.45 a.m. in the Church of St. Paul in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The ceremony will also be broadcast live on the German public TV channel ARD.
Originally a bookseller by profession, Schulz founded his own bookstore near Aachen in 1982. In 1994, he was elected to the European Parliament as a representative of Germany's Social Democratic Party (SPD). In 2012, he was elected President of the European Parliament.
Schulz has received a number of honors and decorations for his commitment to European integration and the preservation of democracy and civil liberties, including honorary doctorates from universities in Kaliningrad, Istanbul and Jerusalem.
